Historic Perspectives on Education (in the United States)

  • Mission of Paths of Learning (1999, Issue #1, p. 4). Shows the recent history and ideals from which our magazine began.
  • Public Education, Alternative Schools, and Democracy, by Ron Miller (Summer 1999, Issue #1, pp. 14-17). Drawing from the history of the 1960s and early 1970s, this article explores the roots of disillusionment with public education. Miller examines the three purposes of different agendas for change in schools: (1) to promote democracy, (2) to support a competitive economic system, and (3) to instill moral values and civic virtues.
  • John Holt and the Origins of Contemporary Homeschooling, by Patrick Farenga (Summer 1999, Issue #1, pp. 34-37). John Holt was one of the biggest movers and shakers in homeschooling until his death in 1985. In this article, Farenga explores the phases of Holt's evolving philosophy and the development of works though his many books and the publishing of the magazine Growing Without Schooling.
