Educating for a Culture of Peace

Miller teamed up with co-editor Riane Eisler, author of the international best-seller The Chalice and the Blade, and thirteen other proponents for peace education, including famed children’s troubadour Raffi, to discuss the role educators might take in addressing the culture of violence and domination that plagues humanity. The authors describe how schools can embody ideals of caring, compassion, respect and diversity, giving young people a meaningful alternative to a society that tolerates bullying, violent conflict and oppression.

After establishing the urgent need to educate for peace, the contributors describe models of education as essentially a human connection, then look at specific practices that would differ from those common in most conventional schools. Finally, several chapters examine difficult social issues and show how an underlying culture of domination could be supplanted by a culture of partnership and caring. In her foreword, Nel Noddings calls the partnership approach advocated in this book “more democratic, more vital, more intellectually honest, and more relevant to the human condition.”
